A superb and interesting collection of items relating to 14611509 Walter Leslie Holmes. 2nd Battalion. Warwickshire regiment. D.O.B. 26th Jan 1914.
-
The 2nd Battalion saw action at the evacuation from Dunkirk in June 1940. They landed on Sword beach on 6th June 1944 as part of the intended advance on Caen, and saw heavy fighting. It was at this point that Walter was captured, probably wounded (Date of action given as 7/6/44). He was transferred to Stalag XIIA Limburg an der Lahn, a holding camp for prisoners in Germany, however by September 1944 it was only known that he was in German hands at an unknown location. He was confirmed as a P.O.W. at Stalag 4g, Oschatz (A series of work camps) in January 1945.
"Casualty List No. 1656. Previously reported Prisoner of War on Casualty List No.1552. Now reported wounded and Prisoner of War in German hands (Germany). Previous Theatre of War Western Europe."
He was reported as liberated on 20th July 1945.
