William Franklin was born at Walthamstow, Essex in 1888 and served with the 83rd Company of the Boys Brigade before enlisting with the Royal Artillery on 16 November 1908. Embodied for service on 5 August 1914 as a Corporal Franklin entered the war in France on 17 March 1915 with 1/6th London Brigade. He was discharged on 3.12.15 due to the end of his term of service and returned to England. It is not clear what William did for the rest of the war, but there is some evidence that he re-enlisted in November 1919 with the Royal Engineers, in a signed letter giving his rank as Sgt 314981
