William Norman Grills was born in 1895 and enlisted with the Royal Artillery, Army Reserve on 30 November 1915. Mobilised for service on 5 August 1916 he was posted to France on 30 March 1917. Promoted Bombardier on 14 August 1918, he was demobilised on 2 December 1919; sold together with a bracelet inscribed 'H. M. Grills (his wife, Hilda May) 32 Bonchurch Rd. Portsmouth Hants.'
