Donald Nicholson first serves in France from 12 August 1914 with the 5th Divisional Supply Column (48 Motor Transport Company) and was discharged on 27 June 1915  as a result of being wounded, and he is entitled to a Silver War Badge.

His service number indicates that he was a member of the Mechanical Transport (Special Reserve) and the book 'Army Service Corps 1902-1914' by Michael Young, published 2000 includes excerpts from this unit's War Diary that place it at Le Cateau on 24 August 1914, Peronne on the 26th and 27 August 1914. The Diary escribes the chaotic nature of the Retreat and the efforts of the unit to resupply the Army while still trying to salvage its vehicles. Incidentally on the 25 December 1914 the Company were involved with the distribution of the Princess Mary's Christmas boxes.
