William Appleby first enlisted as a Private in the Durham Light Infantry, with whom he served under regimental number 3380, but at an unknown date transferred to the Royal Field Artillery, serving as a Gunner and with regimental number 232325. He and his unit were disembarked at the Western Front on 12 October 1915. Appleby survived the war and was discharged on 8 April 1919 and was further entitled to a British War and Victory Medal pair; sold together with copied research.
