William III. Crown. 1696 'Forgery'

This unusual item is struck in either base metal. (Pewter?) or low grade silver. It has the letters ES engraved to the reverse. It has a fully lettered OCTAVO edge and my belief from examining the coin is that it was added as a strip of metal to the edge. Its difficult to date this item but it does appear to have some age to it.

It is slightly oversized at 40mm and substantially underweight at 21.97g. Near VF condition.

Any further information on this forgery type would be welcome
