Although spinks list the 1888 Shilling as both a more common 8/7 overdate and a rarer 1888 no overdate, other authorities state that all 1888 shillings are struck with the final 8 over a 7.
Normally the bar of the 7 is a pretty obvious feature, but I had to check with a microscope to make sure with this one.
So here we have a nice example which to the naked eye is not an obvious overdate. A little discolouration to the obverse as pictured.
