The Mary Queen of Scots bawbee was a billon (silver-copper alloy) coin minted in Edinburgh between 1542 and 1567, valued at sixpence. It features a crowned thistle with "M-R" (Maria Regina) and the legend MARIA DEI G R SCOTORVM. These, often roughly hammered, 22mm coins are notable for the saltire on the reverse
