Walter Albert Ottley was born at Croydon, London in 1877 and worked as a Carman prior to enlisting with the 7th Dragoons at London on 26 September 1898. Seeing home service at first he was posted to South Africa on 8 February 1900, serving there until 1 July when he returned to Britain. After seven months there Ottley returned to the war and served until the end of the conflict. The Regiment saw action during the invasion of Cape Colony, helping to clear the invaders from the state. They later saw heavy service during the Guerrilla phase of the conflict including a notable action with General Elliot's Column near Deilfontein on 1 June 1902.
Again returning to Britain Ottley joined the Army Reserve on 26 September 1906. Mobilised upon the outbreak of the Great War with the Army Veterinary Corps on 5 August he entered the war in France on 13 August 1914. Advanced Sergeant on 25 July 1916. After the war he joined the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, East Anglian Division and later the 31st Glasgow Brigade. Ottley was finally demobilised on 12 July 1919.
