Private W. D. Richardson, Seaforth Highlanders, who was taken prisoner of war during the Fall of France in 1940
General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, Palestine (2874292 Pte. W. Richardson. Seaforth.); 1939-1945 Star; War Medal 1939-45, good very fine
W. D. Richardson served in Palestine prior to the outbreak of the Second World War with the 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. The Battalion fell back on St. Valery during the confused and bloody fighting, finding themselves cut off there. They surrendered with the rest of the 51st Highland Division on 12 June 1940 however Richardson's date of capture was not reported so it could be said he went in the bag prior to that. An article in the Aberdeen Evening Express in August 1940, listing him missing, further records:
'Pte. W. D. Richardson, Seaforth Highlanders, has previously served seven years and his wife resides at 6 Hutcheon Street, Aberdeen, and he is the second son'
Taken to Stalag XX at Thorn, Poland he appears to have remained there for the rest of the war, being repatriated in 1945; sold together with copied research.
