Edward C Hewett was a Mess Room Steward serving on SS Fallodon, a defensively armed British Merchant steamer. On 28 December 1917 when on route from Le Havre in ballast for the Clyde, she was torpedoed by German submarine UC-71 and sank. All bar one of the crew survived.
UC71 was captained by Oberleutnant Ernst Steindorff, who is credited with sinking 30 ships during the war.
