James Taylor was born at Inverness. A groom in civil life, he attested for the Royal Field Artillery in February 1903. He served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 16 August 1914 and saw further service with the Army Service Corps and the Royal Engineers. Taylor was discharged in February 1916 at the end of his period of engagement.
