WW1. 1914 Star. Smith. RNVR. Nelson Battalion.
£169.00
1914 Star (Cly. 2/1968. H. Smith, A.B. R.N.V.R. Nelson Bttn. R.N.D.), with his identity tag, named lid for box of issue and cap badge.
Hugh Goldie Smith was born on 22/3/1893, (This is what he told the recruiting office) However it is likely that he lied about his age and his real DOB was 22/3/1896. He joined the RNVR 0n 15/1/1912. as part of the 2nd Clyde division, and later The Nelson Battalion.
His 1914 Star was issued to HMS "Pekin", A shore base at Grimsby on 5/2/1919, and he is entitled to a clasp for the star, issued 8/7/1920.
His rank of 'Writer' indicates that his role was clerical, but his star and clasp entitlement shows that he would have seen action under fire at the siege of Antwerp in 1914.
He was Demobilised on 24th June 1919. After the war he married and emigrated to Canada, where he died on November 8th 1967
As well as the star and clasp, he is entitled to a war medal and victory medal.
A scarce issue to The Nelson Battalion, with his original non standard ID tag. The badge was with the lot at auction, and may or may not be period.
